Urban Sustainability

Fernwood NRG is committed to urban sustainability. To date, we have been able to manifest this commitment through several environmental initiatives:

  • We installed a geothermal heating system in the Cornerstone Building, as well as thermal windows and dual-flush toilets in the Cornerstone Apartments,
  • We installed solar hot water heating and an edible landscape at Park Place Apartments, along with thermal windows and dual-flush toilets,
  • We are pursuing zero waste in our operations at the Cornerstone Cafe and at the Fernwood Community Centre, including regular composting, full recycling including special plastics,
  • The Cornerstone Cafe to-go cups are compostable and are charged for to give an economic incentive to bring a travel mug,
  • Fernwood NRG organizes the monthly recycling day for electronics and other hard-to-recycle items,
  • We are a member of the Victoria Car-Share Co-op and use their vehicles for errands rather than having our own vehicle,
  • We have recently taken responsibility for Spring Ridge Common, an urban permaculture demonstration, and
  • We support the Good Food Box (an urban food security program) through a comprehensive partnership.
