Kitchen Support Worker

Job Summary

Reporting to the Food Security Coordinator, and taking daily instruction from the Community Centre Cook, the Kitchen Support Worker is responsible for supporting the day-to-day activities of the Fernwood Community Centre kitchen and the Community Centre Cook. The Fernwood Community Centre provides up to 150 snacks and up to 120 meals daily for infants all the way through to seniors. This position is a dynamic role and includes but is not limited to carrying out prep, cleaning, inventory maintenance, organizing and logging duties.

General Responsibilities

  • Support in the preparation and serving of food for programs at the Fernwood Community Centre including daily snacks, lunch, and dinner as instructed by the Community Centre Cook
  • Clean dishes and the kitchen (daily)
  • Maintain cleanliness of the pantry and cold storage (daily)
  • Keep logs of food and appliance temperatures (daily)
  • Maintain the best before dates on products and rotate food (weekly)
  • Support the in-take, processing, and logging of food donations (weekly)
  • Thaw and clean deep freezes as needed

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Minimum 1 year kitchen experience preferred – basic knife skills is an asset
  • Food Safe Certificate – Level 1
  • First Aid — Occupational First Aid preferred
  • Ability to follow instruction
  • Attention to detail
  • The successful candidate will undergo a criminal record check for working with vulnerable adults and children

Working Conditions / Equipment Used 

  • Ability to lift and move boxes of produce and frozen foods (up to 50 lbs)
  • Ability to work positively in a shared kitchen
  • Ability to work cooperatively in a team environment
  • Ability to work in a busy and sometimes noisy environment
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision

Wage / Hours of Work

  • 20hrs/week, $11.25 – $12/hr depending on experience
  • Mon, Tues, Thurs, Fri 10am-2pm, and Wed 9am-1pm, some flexibility required
  • This is a part-time position

Substitute Early Childhood Educators: we are currently looking for Early Childhood Educators to assist in delivery of quality child care in our Childcare Centres during the summers as well as ongoing into the fall. The Early Childhood Educator will provide a quality caring and supportive child care program to members of the Fernwood community that addresses their unique child care needs, meets all regulatory standards required by federal, provincial and municipal governments, and operates within the Child Care Practitioner Occupational Standards and Code of Ethics as defined by the Canadian Child Care Federation.

Ideal applicants will possess:

• Diploma in Early Childhood Education (ECE certification)

• Current BC License to Practice • Documentation in accordance with Community Care Facilities Branch licensing requirements

• An Understanding of the issues that affect children and their families

• Excellent interpersonal skills with parents, community members

• Mature and responsible attitude towards work

• Willingness to work flexible hours

Out of School Care Leader: Fernwood Neighbourhood Out of School Care (FNOSC) provides care to children from George Jay Elementary School. Our objectives are to provide children with a safe, nurturing, supportive, and respectful environment. There are two program rooms with a total of 20 children in the program. We are looking for someone to carry out the programing in one of the rooms. Our ideal candidate is a professional, positive, enthusiastic child care provider able to offer creative programming. We are seeking a team player who is safety conscious and able to work independently with children. The ideal applicant will possess:

  • Must meet Child Care Licensing Regulation Requirements:-a minimum of 19 years of age – Doctor’s note of good health – First Aid & CPR – 20 hours of training in the areas of Child Development, Nutrition, Health & Safety or Guidance (this could be an elementary school disciplinary course, a child psychology course, or a series of workshops for child care workers) – Criminal Record Check – Immunization Records
  • Child care experience (Out of School Care experience an asset)
  • Programming skills
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Creativity
  • Ability to be both child and family focused

Hours

  • Monday- Friday 2:30 pm-5:30 pm
  • Possible morning shift 7:00 am-9:00 am
  • Possible full day shifts for teacher strike, Pro-D Day, and holiday camps

Wage

  • $15/hr
