Interested in becoming more involved with your community? Fernwood NRG offers volunteer opportunities ranging from child care, special events, food access, seniors programming, and much more.

Volunteering is a great way to get involved in the neighbourhood, learn about the work of Fernwood NRG, and to meet your neighbours. It also leaves you a warm fuzzy feeling at the end of the day.

Good Food Box:

Good Food Box Delivery Driver Volunteer
The Good Food Box is a non-profit alternative fruit and vegetable distribution system run by Fernwood NRG. We are looking for delivery route drivers to support the distribution of the good food boxes every week. In recognition of your volunteer service, Fernwood NRG provides $10 for gas and fruits and veggies. If you can’t commit to every week, we accommodate depending on your schedule!

Duties & Responsibilities
-Volunteering from 10 am-1:30 pm on Wednesdays 
-Delivering approx. 12-15 Good Food Boxes to eight addresses in a given geographical area
-Able to lift up to 15 lbs
-Must have a vehicle and valid driver license

Good Food Box Packer 
The Good Food Box is a non-profit alternative fruit and vegetable distribution system run by Fernwood NRG.  We are looking for volunteers to support with packing boxes Wednesday mornings at Fernwood Community Centre. In recognition of your volunteer service, Fernwood NRG provides breakfast every Wednesday and fresh fruits and veggies. If you can’t commit to every week, we accommodate depending on your schedule!

Duties & Responsibilities
-Volunteering from 8:30- 11:00 am on Wednesdays
-Setting up and taking down tables
-Packing fresh fruit and veggies in an assembly line format
-Supporting the Good Food Box Coordinator
-Quality control: checking over produce to make sure it isn’t compromised

Family Programs:

Cobs Bread Pick Up 
We are looking for a volunteer to pick up and deliver bread from Cobs (Shelbourne Plaza) to Fernwood Community Centre. This service is greatly appreciated by local community members who access bread every other week! Fernwood NRG will provide a stipend for travel costs.

Duties & Responsibilities
-Volunteering from 6:45-8:00 pm on Wednesday evenings (rotating schedules available) 
-Pick up bread from Cobs at Shelbourne Plaza (#12-3639 Shelbourne St.)
-Deliver to Fernwood Community Centre (1240 Gladstone Ave.)
-Some heavy lifting required (up to 20 lbs)
-Must have access to a vehicle

Childminding Volunteer
Victoria Best Babies is a Canadian Prenatal Nutritional Program sponsored by Fernwood NRG with funding from the Public Health Agency of Canada. We offer post and pre-natal groups on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 11 am-1 pm. We are looking for childminding volunteers to watch children ages 0-1 years old.

Duties & Responsibilities

-Holding/carrying children
-Facilitating play with kids
-Take direction from the Family Support Supervisors
-Volunteer between 11-1 pm on Wednesday and/or Thursdays

Family Dinner Children’s Activity Volunteer
We host Family Dinner every Monday evening from 5-7 pm. Fernwood Family Dinner is an opportunity for families to enjoy a prepared meal with other members of the community and have the ability to socialize with neighbours. We are looking for volunteers to plan and prepare play activities for children at the end of dinner. (No dinner on March 30, April 13, June 22, Aug 3, Sept 7, Oct 12 & Dec 28).

Duties & Responsibilities

-Prepare and plan Family Dinner children activities (supplies included)
-Play with children (games, activities, crafts etc.)
-Volunteer from 5:30-7 pm Monday evenings

Toy Cleaner Volunteer
Family Resource Program (FRP) is a drop in interactive program where parents and children have fun, bond, and interact through play. It provides opportunities for families facing challenging life circumstances with children ages 0-5. We are looking for volunteers to clean toys Thursdays from 11:30-1:30 pm.

Duties & Responsibilities
-Clean and wipe down toys used during Family Resource Program
-Place toys through sanitizer and dry
-Put toys away in an orderly fashion
-Support Family Resource Program supervisors with other clean up tasks
-Volunteer Thursdays from 11:30-1:30 pm

Clothing Donation Pick Up Volunteer
Every second Friday WIN (Women In Need) and Thistle & Wren donate children’s clothing to Fernwood NRG to be distributed to community members who utilize our Family Resource Programs. We are in need of a volunteer to pick up and drop off donations to Fernwood Community Centre. Volunteers must use their own vehicles. Gas stipend provided for travel costs!

Duties & Responsibilities

-Pick up donations from WIN (Pandora Ave)
-Pick up donations from Thistle & Wren (Fernwood Square)
-Drop off donations to Fernwood Community Centre
-Every second Friday (hours flexible)

Clothing Support Volunteer
Family Resource Program (FRP) is a drop in interactive program which provides opportunities for families facing challenging life circumstances with children ages 0-5. We receive donations from WIN and Thistle & Wren twice a month and looking for a volunteer to help organize the clothing. This position is a flexible positions occurring once per month for a few hours.

Duties & Responsibilities

-Sorting clothes by size
-Folding clothes and reorganizing closet/cupboard
-Keeping clothing neat and tidy
-Volunteer once a month for 2 hours (flexible times)

Food Support Volunteer
Fernwood NRG is a recipient of the Mustard Seed Food Rescue Project who redistributes food into the community. We distribute the rescued food back into the community, supporting families in challenging life circumstances. We are looking for volunteer to deliver food to recipients. Volunteers must use their own vehicles. Gas stipend provided for travel costs!

Duties & Responsibilities

-Delivering food the first Tuesday of every month
-Deliveries start at 4:00 pm
-Drive to homes with a provided map in the Victoria area
-Must keep recipients information confidential

Family Resource Program Activity Volunteer
Family Resource Program occurs every Thursday from 9:30-11:30 am and we are looking for a volunteer to plan and prepare play activities for children during programming.

Duties & Responsibilities

-Prepare and plan family resource activities (supplies included)
-Play with children (games, activities, crafts etc.)
-Volunteer from 9:30-11:30 am Thursday mornings

Childcare

Childcare Volunteer
Fernwood NRG provides childcare for children ages 6 months-12 years and our childcare staff work to create a space for children to feel safe, supported, and nurtured. We are looking for volunteers to support our childcare staff and who are enthusiastic about working with children. Flexible volunteer hours available. Shifts from Monday to Friday 9 am-12 pm or 2-5 pm. Applicants must provide two character references and proof of immunization when volunteering in childcare.

Duties & Responsibilities
-Play with children (games, activities, crafts etc.)
-Assist children transition into different activities (going inside or outside etc.)
-Supporting staff by serving lunch, wiping down surfaces, and general housekeeping duties

Village Vibe 

Village Vibe Writer
The Village Vibe is Fernwood NRG’s community newspaper created to communicate with residents about happenings in the Fernwood neighbourhood. The Village Vibe is produced bi-monthly (every two months) by an editorial committee comprised of Fernwood NRG staff, board members, contributors and neighbourhood residents. Please provide a writing sample upon applying.

Duties & Responsibilities 

-Pitch story ideas to editor relating to happenings in the Fernwood neighbourhood
-Write, interview and take photographs of local business owners, community members, organizations, etc.
-Provide print ready articles with a specific word count by an assigned deadline

Village Vibe Distribution Coordinator 
The Village Vibe is Fernwood NRG’s community newspaper created to communicate with residents about happenings in the Fernwood neighbourhood. The Village Vibe is produced bi-monthly (every two months) by an editorial committee comprised of Fernwood NRG staff, board members, contributors and neighbourhood residents.

Duties & Responsibilities

-Deliver Village Vibe newspaper to designated areas within the Fernwood Neighbourhood
-Monitor Distribution boxes around the neighbourhood and report any issues to supervisor
