Collecting Personal Information

The purpose of our websites and other electronic communications are to keep you informed about whatā€™s happening in Fernwood and the wider community, and make it easy and convenient for you to sign up for our programs. We do not require you to provide personal information to view our websites.

When you donate to us, sign-up for one of our programs or subscribe to our email updates, we will ask for additional information. We do this to keep in touch with you through newsletters or email, and provide you with services that may be valuable to you. We may email, phone or mail you to talk to you about making a donation.

We collect, store, and use the personal data relating to any transactions carried out between you and Fernwood NRG, such as making a donation, subscribing to our website services, email notifications and/or newsletters, and any other information that you choose to send to us. We do not ever collect or store your credit card information, that is handled by secure third party services, like PayPal.

We may sometimes use services that are cloud-based and hosted outside of Canada, where privacy laws may offer different levels of protection. Your personal information may also be subject to access by and disclosure to the local courts, law enforcement and national security authorities under the applicable foreign legislation. You may contact us at web@fernwoodnrg.ca if you would prefer that your personal information not be placed on web servers outside Canada, and we will do our best to accommodate this request.

Website ā€œCookiesā€

A website cookie is a small text file that is saved on your computer by your web browser and stores information as you explore the internet. Fernwood NRGā€™s websites may use ā€œcookiesā€ to help personalize your online experience. They are widely used by most websites to help simplify your experience. One of the primary purposes of a cookie is to tell the web server that you have returned to a specific page, so you do not need to re-enter your personal information. By default, most browsers accept cookies, but you have the ability to decline them by adjusting your browser settings.

How Fernwood NRG uses cookies

Cookies can tell us:

  • Which of our websites or apps you visit and how often
(we focus our limited IT budget on the most used pages)
  • How you navigate our sites, what you click on and what you share
(so we can make using our sites easier and more effective)
  • Your location (some of Fernwood NRGā€™s programs are regional, and some are just in Fernwood, this helps get you relevant information)
  • What kind of device and browser you use
(so our webpage will fit the screen you are using)
  • Your IP address
(this helps you more easily navigate our website)

Almost all of the information you create when interacting with our web properties does not include any indication of who you are. The data you do share with us when you interact with us online helps us offer more content that’s relevant to you.

Some of the advertising platforms we use rely on cookies to show you ads.

Advertising on Social Media and Other Websites

We may use social media cookies to identify people who have provided contact information to us with those who are registered users of Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and LinkedIn. We may create custom audiences by matching contact information you have shared with us by matching it with users of social media platforms in order to deliver more useful and relevant advertising content to you. (See Facebookā€™s Custom Audiences https://www.facebook.com/business/help/341425252616329?id=2469097953376494 for more information.)

All data matching with Facebook is done in a way such that your personal information is only provided to the social media platforms if you are already a registered user of the social media platform. Your information is ā€œhashedā€ by Facebook, or anonymized, before it is shared with them and any unmatched hashed data is then permanently deleted from their web servers.

You may opt-out of advertisements and custom audience matching on social media platforms by contacting us at web@fernwoodnrg.ca. Also, itā€™s worth pointing out Facebook, Twitter and Instagram also allow their users to opt-out of receiving third party advertisements.

Data Tracking

In order to better serve our community, in addition to collecting the information listed above, we also use cookies and other tools such as Google Analytics to track web activity. These services provide us with statistical data that does not identify any individual. We may also use embedded images in emails to track open rates for our mailings, so that we can tell which mailings appeal most to our subscribers. We also may collect IP addresses or other data about visits to our website to better understand where our traffic is coming from and how our services and programs are being accessed.

Use of Information:
