The Art of Building Community: Reflections on the Fernwood Pole Painting Project
‘Lee Herrin is the Executive Director of Fernwood Neighbourhood Resource Group which recently organized the Fernwood Pole Painting Project. The successful event saw over 300 neighbourhood residents turn out on a Saturday morning in May to paint more than 100 telephone and hydro poles in Fernwood. Lee grew up in an active neighbourhood in North Vancouver, and got involved in the Fernwood neighbourhood in Victoria in 1997 after returning from graduate school in Toronto. He served on the volunteer Board of Directors from 1998 through 2009 before taking on the senior staff position in 2009.’
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
