Youth Jam: A space to grow through music

>> Kady Savard

The Youth Jam grew out of my early experiences in the music scene. As a young, uncertain singer, I found confidence through Musical Youth Victoria, a grassroots initiative led by Randy Austin and Geoffrey Bucove. It offered local artists instrumental backing and a place to be heard—without grants or government support. Those early shows marked a turning point for me, and I still share footage from them as a reminder of how far I’ve come.

After Randy’s passing last fall, I felt a deep urge to continue what he helped create. I’d pitched a revival of the concept to various non-profits, but it wasn’t until a conversation with Mila—while discussing my FernFest hosting duties—that things clicked. She immediately said, “Why not do it at the Fernwood Community Centre?”

That simple suggestion launched the next chapter. We added a performance at FernFest to wrap the program, with community support from people like Nathan Shelby on sound and help from the City of Victoria and the My Great Neighbourhood Grant. Mila also guided me through the grant writing process.

Music improv teaches powerful skills: collaboration, confidence, communication, and belonging. Especially post-COVID, I saw how needed this was for youth who’d missed vital years of connection. The goal was to give them space to grow, explore, and shine.

Watching them thrive has been the most rewarding part—and the hardest, knowing it’s temporary. I’m now seeking long-term funding to keep it going year-round.
I’d love to see programs like this across the city. If it inspires you, take the idea and run with it. And if you want help starting something similar, I’m here.

Catch the Youth Jam Sessions band, Fern Friends, at 12:45 pm on the Big Fernwood Stage, at FernFest on Saturday, June 14.

Fernwood’s cutest optical shop is celebrating their 1st birthday

Rebecca Eyefinery

The cutest optical shop in town is celebrating their 1st Birthday

Eyefinery Optical Studio is solo owned and operated by local optician Rebecca Knezacek. She started her career in optics in 2011 in Victoria and hasn’t looked back! After spending three years working for frame designers and boutiques in England, then helping two clinics open she felt it was time to follow her dreams and open her own boutique.

Rebecca started Eyefinery on Salt Spring Island in 2022, but after a big life change decided to relocate the shop to Victoria. ‘I really wanted to find a quirky little space in Fernwood for Eyefinery, and I couldn’t be happier with its new home.’ As a single mom, Rebecca is incredibly thankful for the community she is both a resident and business owner of.

The shop has a complete one-on-one experience with eyewear that’s been curated from global independent brands and Canadian made lenses. Rebecca believes in quality over quantity with only 200 always changing frames in store at a time. Rarely re-ordered and exclusive, each customer has their own style. ‘My goal is to have the whole neighbourhood wearing different glasses, we’re all so unique – why wear the same thing?’ says Rebecca.

Eyefinery promotes slow fashion, repairing and reusing eyewear is welcome. She offers free frame adjustments and minor repairs to everyone in the neighbourhood, even if you purchased your glasses elsewhere. If they are sliding down, sitting crooked, missing a screw or nosepad those are all things that can be fixed. Have a new prescription, but love your frames? Rebecca will happily update your lenses and even does some of the lab work in house which means you don’t have to send your glasses away.

To celebrate their Fernwood birthday, Eyefinery is hosting a trunk show, showcasing the entire Kirk & Kirk and Raen collections – including sunglasses. This event is special in that every style in every colour will be here. There will be discounts on frames and lenses, a raffle, food and bevys.

May 9 & 10, 2025 – 10am to 5pm at 2004b Fernwood Rd

Welcome to pop by or book an appointment online at eyefinery.ca, email info@eyefinery.ca or call 778-433-2414.
