The Songhees Nation, with support from the City of Victoria, invites Greater Victoria residents to the third annual South Island Powwow on September 30. The Powwow is hosted on the homelands of the lək̓ʷəŋən people at Royal Athletic Park on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a federal statutory holiday also known as Orange Shirt Day. Admission is free and all are welcome.

The South Island Powwow honours and recognizes survivors of Indian Residential and Day Schools and their families, the Sixties Scoop and the children who never made it home from these institutions. The Powwow also celebrates Indigenous cultures and resiliency and brings people together in celebration to build bridges amongst all Nations.

Local First Nations, along with Nations from the Mainland, have been invited to participate in this time-honoured event, and the entire South Island community is welcome to attend. With the introduction of dance and drum special performances, along with presentations from Métis fiddlers and other Island First Nations dance groups, there will be much to witness.

“The South Island Powwow brings us together in the spirit of unity and remembrance. This day is one for reflection and honour, recognizing our shared history and the resilience of our communities,” said Chief Ron Sam. “Let us use this occasion to deepen our commitment to healing and as an opportunity to share the vibrancy of Indigenous cultures that have withstood colonization. Together, we build a future rooted in truth and mutual respect.”

The South Island Powwow will feature the traditional grand entry of Nations, with Indigenous song and dance with two host drum groups, Smokey Valley and Wild River, along with guest speakers, more than 80 vendors and multiple food trucks. Gates will open at 10 a.m.

“It’s a great honour for the City to once again collaborate with the Songhees Nation for this powerful celebration of Indigenous cultures and resiliency,” said Mayor Marianne Alto. “We warmly invite the entire South Island community to join us September 30 to participate in this opportunity for learning, acknowledgement and recognition of our shared commitment to reconciliation.”
