Fernwood NRG is creating a Youth Leadership Program that will run out of the Fernwood Community Centre. Youth will have the opportunity to gain leadership skills through the Fernwood Student Dinner, a weekly meal aimed at increasing food security for post-secondary students, middle and high school aged students are also very welcome!

This program will mentor middle and high-school aged youth to help prepare and serve Student Dinner as well as plan activities that coincide with the shared meal. Youth will have the opportunity to build food related skills and event planning with a focus on sustainability (Student Dinner is made from 90% reclaimed foods!).

Ongoing Youth Programming (starting March 6th):

Tuesdays 3:30-4:30pm @ the Fernwood Community Centre

  • Food Prep (2-3 youth): Youth will have the opportunity to learn food prep skills (knife skills, proper cleaning & cutting techniques, storage rotation, quantities and proportion) from our talented Chef, David Gillis. We will be prepping for Student Dinner, which happens every Wednesday between 6-7:30pm.
  • Event Planning: At the same time, another youth group will have the opportunity to plan events that coincide with Student Dinner with Fernwood NRG Event Coordinator and Youth Programs Assistant, Kathryn Juricic. Past events include: how-to mend your own clothes, an artisan market, a band, and a clothing swap. Youth will also have the opportunity to be involved with other event planning and food security opportunities with Fernwood NRG.

Wednesdays 3:30-4:30pm @ the Fernwood Community Centre

  • Dinner Execution (2-3 youth): Youth will have the opportunity to execute Student Dinner, a community dinner for over 70 people. These skills include: assembling, cooking techniques, temperatures, time, food safety and service and seasoning. Youth will be supervised by David and Kathryn.

… Youth Programming will continue throughout the summer (Student Dinner takes the summer off) and will include environmentally themed projects and mentoring in event planning. It’ll give youth an opportunity to be a part of neighbourhood events, such as FernFest and our Food + Growing Workshops.
